1972 carpet pad

I am replacing the carpeting and pad in my '72. The carpeting and pad that I am replacing is not original material and therefore cannot be used as a guide. The replacement jute (sound deadener) has an Ethylene Vinyl Acetate backing. My question is: which direction does the backing go? facing up or facing down.

Any help well be appreciated. Thanks.

I have put carpet in my 64, 72 and 73.
The pad has always been glued to ths back of the carpet.
