    270 Coil

What is the difference between the repro with embossing and the original coil?

    Thanks,

I don't think there's a definitive answer to your question. Why? Well, you're lumping all 'repro' ignition coils into the same basket as if there was only one source for them...

On factory originals, we've seen two different versions and we know we don't know what the differences mean. One is embossed 'BR 270' and the other is wacked 'BR-270'. Currently, most judges accept either version.

On repro coils, some are made by removing the case from scrap yard donor coils, testing and sorting them according to their electrical characteristics and re-capsulating them using a fresh, un-stamped, steel case that's been de-bossed to yield the 'proper' external identification marks.

There are several sources who supply such. That approach requires no license from GM because the core parts are/were real McCoy Delco Remy production pieces.

Now, there are also GM licensees out there, but I don't know if any are doing Shark era coils yet. So, bottom line, without looking at the specific 'reproduction' coil you're considering buying, I don't think anyone can give you an answer. And, even if you did have a sample, you'd probably get different answers from different judges based on their specific knowledge...

Jack -- I'm not a C3 person, so tell me if this pic is the "whacked" version with '270' on top line, and 'B - R' on second line.

I think this is original to a '74 Corvette that was being parted-out about 18 years ago; Also got the distributor 1112247 4E31.

Is the embossed 'BR - 270' (all one line ?) an earlier C3 version ?

That is indeed one of the known original emboss variations. You'll also find some emboss marks in the Bakelite top, typically near one of the primary stud pads.

I'm not sure we know what these emboss marks mean...they might refer to the source mold that made that particular tower...
