    ZR1 Record Run

Here's a video of the ZR1 record-setting run at the Nurburgring.

At one point, he accelerates from 150 to 160 mph in about 2 seconds.

        Bill:

I saw 179 mph on the straight. Mero muffed a few corners, he even threw his hand up in frustration at one point.

You might enjoy the Top Gear Bugatti Veyron top speed test on You Tube. James May is a riot.

When I first read your post, I thought you had DONE 179 on the straight!

I think his hand was saying "I know, I know...shut up" to those of us behind the camera.

The Veyron clip was GREAT. The comparison to the Concorde...clever. The fact that the tires will last 15 minutes, but the fuel only lasts 12 answered my question.

I've never run top speed in my cars because, in 1967, a "friend" showed me 6500 rpm in his '65 396. The speedo was pegged. When we got back home, he showed me that the tires were expanding so much that they were rubbing the paint off the wheel lips. That cured my interest in top speed.

            Bill:

Sorry about the confusion. The fastest I've ever been in a car was 130+ (mph) on the Autobon. The fastest I've ever been on a closed circuit is about 110.

Interestingly enough, in 1973 my buddies and I were coming back from visiting a college campus. The driver opened his 69 Baracuda up on the Interstate. We saw about 120, but the tires were vibrating so badly that our teeth were rattling. I've often thought about the speed rating on those tires and how stupid that was.

I've never really been into speed either. Acceleration and cornering are my favorite parts of driving. My factory 4:11 rear end is perfect for me.

                Re: ZR1 Record Run

We all seem to have done some crazy things in our youth and it's a wonder we're still alive; I'm not trying to play "can you top this?", but back in 63 with my L-76 Convertible (top up), my buddy and I were going to visit Las Vagas while stationed at White Sands in New Mexico. Back then there was no speed limit in Navada. We ran it up as high as we safely could. We saw 150 on the speedo at about 6700 rpm + (both needles bouncing), but never believed it was actual due to the dynamics of wheel/tire slip/growth, etc. The famous C-2 was doing it's best interpretation of a wing as it danced all over the place. The worst thing about this was we were on U.S. Royal 6.70x15 tires!! Now that was crazy! (I had previously blew one out while drag racing just by hitting a small rock). On a later run at 130+ I thought we would run into a shower so I opened the headlights and learned something about aero dynamics; The car became much more stable at that speed, and it became harder to maintain that speed as well.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. My buddy has long since passed so you'll have to take my word for it.

Did he lift on the last straight?

About the 7 minute mark on the last long straight, he just touchs 179 mph while hitting 52-5300 rpm's, with some more straight to go. So did he lift or did he reach terminal velocity where air drag equaled horsepower?

Sander that guy on the Auto barn is a fruit loop how can somebody do 300 kph on a busy road like that. I wonder why we have speed limits on our highways. I'm no prune and love speed but that's risking other peoples lives and that's a no no. Besides that idiot the car is very quick with a great looking body I wonder if Santa will bring me one for Christmas

I think the slight bend approaching and/or the slight "hill" caused him to "settle" for 179. You are putting a lot of torque through those rear tires. They might not have a lot of lateral traction reserve. Getting air under the car would probably give us a great view of the German sky...if the camera survived.

                        Stewart;

My last experience on the AutoBahn was over 10 years ago on a tour bus stuck in stop and go "work break" traffic. I too have trouble matching that image to this video. The camera was bouncing some - could you tell if that was 300 or 320 kph?

Looks like he hit 310 on camera, and he may have still been accelerating.

Wow! That first video is something.
The second one reminds me of a trip from Paris to central Germany a few years back.....120mph.......in a taxi, no less. Thank goodness I wasn't driving. And managed not to leave fingerprints in the guys dash. But did have to decide whether to ride along with dignity or scream like a girl.
Or how about 112 on the back of a motorcycle? (I truly hate them.) I know that's nothing like what some of you have done.....but, what fun.
                              Love the videos........
                              Cheers, Sandy
