    j56 brakes

    Bought a 1967 435hp car a week ago, got it home and noticed some extra short brake lines under the power brake booster, hooked to a 6 inch long bur or should I say bolt type thing, could this be one of the 267 built? Not smart enough to show a picture.

    Keith------

    What you are describing sounds like the Kelsey-Hayes adjustable proportioning valve used only with J-56 applications. The question is whether it's original to the car. If the car is equipped with J-56, there should be other features present which are easily discernable:

    1) cast caliper supports on the front brake calipers;

    2) "dual pin" pad retention for the front calipers;

    3) if the car is a very early car (with calipers with casting numbers beginning with "546"), there's no way to tell a difference in the pistons because there is no difference in the pistons. If it's a later car (with "545" caliper casting, there should be thick insulators on the front of the brake pistons;

    4) all 1967 with J-56 used master cylinder with casting number 5460346. ONLY those 1967's originally built with J-56 have this master cylinder (although many later 68-76 Corvettes also use it). The master cylinder is coded "PG" and has bleeder valves.

    So, the above are some things to look for. However, the fact of the matter is that ANY of these components could have been ADDED or REMOVED along the way. The only real way to know if the car is an original J-56 is to have irrefutable documentation.

      thanks Joe, Nov car, repo master cylinder, single pin and it gets worse, no dimpel at the 13 or 14th opening of the fresh air grill.
