    The belt being too tight can take out the bearing.

      A battery that is depleted will also create electrical issues for an alternator. One should NEVER use the alternator to recharge a dead battery. A 42-amp alternator should put out 42 amps, but it will not do so indefinitely. There is a time limit (and no, I don't know how long that is) after which the alternator will overheat and "burn up." This will happen to brand new alternators as well as restored units.

      A bad battery will destroy a 150-amp alternator. Ask me how I know.

      And by the way a bad sealed battery will damage an alternator more rapidly than a bad lead acid battery. Some of the sealed batteries -- especially the Optima brand -- have a failure mode in which they may short internally -- as can happen to any battery. That will kill any alternator real quick.
