67 Rear Exhaust Panel to Rear Quarter Question

Hey, was working under the car this weekend and noticed my DS rear exhaust panel to DS rear quarter panel junction was loose. Looked underneath and found that there was one completely rusted through bolt and then another bolt a little farther back that had not been tightened down properly. I assumed the more rearward bolt was an add on since the rusted out one couldn't be tighten. Of course when I went to try and loosen the rusted one it completely crumbled away from the panels. That left me enough room to tighten the other bolt down properly and correct the looseness issue. Since the "original" hole was now vacant, I just tried to look up some proper bolts to attach the panel correctly and all I could find were rivets. So, was the rear exhaust panel riveted to the rear quarter panel or do I need to keep looking for those bolts? AO Smith body, just in case that matters. Thanks.

    Hi Kirk
If you are speaking of the lower corner junction, there was one hole with one bolt, washer and nut. No rivets.
Speaking from memory, the bolt is a 1/4"-20, a 7/16" head with a TR headmark, 3/4" long. The split washer fits under the bolt head, outboard. The 7/16" nut is unique with a tapered collar and "Teeth" (forgot the accurate term, sorry) in the contact surface, inboard.

Well Kirk check your AIM for the correct story (or what was expected on the assembly line). Look in Section 1, Assembly around C3.00. Sorry mine is a 64 and changes may have happen by 67.
For a 64 the special nut (pn 4728063) is outboard the bolt and flat washer (no lock washer) are inboard. That direction is a pain to assemble so expect many have been reversed by owners (even on factory floor).

Note my rear body filler panel has two holes on each side and I have always used the lower holes for bolts. No idea why the double holes, may have been for holding the shims (only seen one car with these)

My 67 has two holes as well. It appears on both sides that the original holes and bolts have rusted away - as I just removed from the DS. I will comment though that the bolt appeared to be identical to the one in the pick and remaining rusted portion was the nut/integral washer portion and that was located outboard. Anyone know if they are still making these? Thanks.

Richard Fortier now manufactures this 1/4"-20 special flanged nut; he advertises in the "Driveline".

Anyone got any of these bolts extra that they would like to "share"? PM me please. Thanks.
