    Best NCRS Correct Frame Paint

Need to do some touch-up work before stenciling my frame. What is the best NCRS correct paint for the frame? Thanks.

    Kirk:

Do a search on chassis paint. There was a pretty long thread on this just a few weeks ago and I'm sure you'll find much more in the archives.

      Kirk,

An asphalt based coating was originally used on the frame. Quanta used to make it, but it's no longer listed on their website. Corvette Central still has it listed.

I spoke to Quanta and they were in the process of re-formulating the asphalt-based paint and implied it would be available by the end of the year. Just wondered if that was what most people used and I should wait for it, or whether something else was acceptable. Thanks.

            Kirk,
For Frame touch-ups and small components I use Krylon 1618 (BBQ Black). It sprays easily, blends in nicely and the glossiness/Dullness is almost perfect. Also, It's easy to find. You will not be disappointed in the results.
I have not used Quantas frame paint but I have talked to others who didn't care for the results.
            Good Luck.

I attempted to use the paint from Quantas several years ago. I applied it over DP-90 primer. It went on well looked very nice but really never dried the way I thought it should have. To be specific it remained tachy for a long time. I ended up using mineral spirits and removed all the asphalt paint leaving the base primer. I then followed up with a PPG paint that had a 60% sheen. It turned out to be a very good decision because of the durability. When you see how easy the ashpalt paint comes off you realize that if you have a fuel spill or any other caustic liquid you will remove that paint easily and it would be difficult to touch up.
