    Motor Mount Install - C2

    I want to replace the motor mounts on my 1966 BB. Can I block the engine on a jack with a 2"x8"x12"long wood plate on it under the oil pan or will that damage the oil pan? If that wont work than how/where can I support the engine during the mount installation?

    I have used that method on other car types with no problem, but never on a C2. Depending on the condition of the car, I would try it on my own. Maybe someone else can comment on this method. As for alternative methods - an engine hoist or come along to something secure above. You really don't need much pressure on it and you don't have to lift very far (in fact you don't want to lift too far).

      I place a wood block under the harmonic balancer and lift from there. No problem, at all. As has been mentioned, you don't want to lift it anymore than is absolutely necessary and that's not very much.

        You don't want to chance denting your oil pan. I made up a (crude, but effective) "saddle" for my C1's using a 2x6 base and 1x6 sides mounted to the top of the base, about an inch deeper than the oil pan, that lifts on the pan rail bolt heads; the inside-to-inside dimension is about 1/8" wider than the width of the oil pan. The notch at the top is to clear the dipstick "bump".

          John,

          Did you have a subsequent problem with a leaking oil pan gasket - it seems to me that this method would put additional "crush" on the gasket if I'm reading it correctly where you "transferred" the weight.......(your thoughts?)

            Thanks again for the good information. I have to raise the engine slightly to get the mount bolts out.

              Not a problem - it lifts on the bolt heads, not on the pan flange.

                Hello Larry;

                John's method is very effective.

                Also consider lifting the engine from above ei: engine hoist or chain hoist.
                Try using the water pump bolts with studs inserted and double nuts.
                This also gives additional working room underneath.

                Hope this helps.

                  Thanks Ray,

                  Unfortunately I dont have a hoist and nothing strong enough above to hook the hoist to. So I must lift it.
