Mirror Glass Replacement

Hi All;

Had the 1965 judged for the first time this past weekend and it did pretty well. I got dinged on a number of small items which I am beginning to take care of. One item was the date code on the outside rear view mirror.

I've ordered a date coded mirror replacement but was wondering if anyone could give me an idea as to how to remove the mirror glass and install the new one.. that is without messing up the chrome!!

Joel - There are several comments in the archives (Use "search" above). An article from a past Restorer magazine is mentioned. I didn't read into them, but you should find significant answers there.

Joe, I assume the glass is held in place like my '55 mirror: a retaining ring around the edge. I just gently pressed on the glass, used a small "pick" type tool to get the ring started out of the groove and removed it by hand. If you are worried about scratching chrome, use a wooded skewer to get the end of the ring out of the groove. Your mirror may have springs inside to keep the glass in tight, make sure you work with the mirror off the car and facing up to keep the springs...Hope this helps.

Thanks.... I will pull it off the car and at least take a close look and do as you suggest. In the archives, someone talked about soaking the mirror in thinner... did not sound right!

I believe the "Thinner" reference would be for the inside rear view mirror.

68's and up were glued in place and there may be some replacement C2 mirrors glued. If your mirror has a retaining ring and you can push it in, it is a snap to pull the retainer and change the mirror glass.

Then you can also tighten up the mounting joint. There is a more recent Restorer article this year about tightening up the mounting joint with screws, which is what I'm going to try next time.

Joel,

If you have the snap ring mirror, it is easier to remove and replace the mirror glass in a horizontal position, so that gravity holds the 3 little springs in place.

The soaking in laquer thinner is for '68 and up side view mirrors. The glass is held in the metal with silicone which comes off in laquer thinner.
