3 degree gloss and 60 degree gloss

    Does 3 degree gloss = semi-flat and 60 degree gloss = semi-gloss or??
Narrowing the area - we're talking 1965 steering column. Thanks.

Re: 3 degree gloss and 60 degree gloss

Loren, from a old PPG interior color sheet, "0" is flat, 3 or 5 are "Low Gloss" and 60degree is "Gloss"

The scale is 0 to 100 degrees (sometimes expressed as %-gloss). The reference is what percent of incident light is reflected back to a 'standard' receptor.

Expressing gloss factor this way is MUCH more precise than what you'll find on 'rattle can' spray paints and just about any professional painter knows how to pick up the ball and run with it given gloss factor expressed in degrees or percent...

Bottom line 3 degrees is VERY close to zero or 'flat' and 60 degress is just a bit about half way up the scale where the term 'semi-gloss' should apply...

My experience is from spraying lacquers in the wood working industry. I agree with Jack, "0 %" would be flat sheen, "100%" would be full gloss sheen and semi-gloss would be"50%" sheen. I like to buy full gloss paint and then flatten with agent to I acquire the sheen I like or called for in the JG.
