C2 Got the New Side Pipes On!

Well, of course they look great but they are loud. I went with the Allen Stainless "standard GM sound" (what they wrote on the order at Carlisle).

They do sound authentic but I am not an expert there. All I can say is it is louder than I expected and I hope I don't regret it.

Maybe it's just an adjustment I have to go through like "sticker shock". After a while you get used to what things cost. Or, earplugs.

Doing a road rally tomorrow with a friend's Austin Healy club so I'll see. Wife didn't complain yet so that's a good sign.

You will never get used to the noise. When I bought my '67, it had the original factory installed sidepipes on the car. They were a little on the rusty side, so I took them off and got a set of Allen's SS pipes, they were twice as loud as the stock pipes. After three months I couldn't take the noise anymore. Put the originals back on and sold the Allen's pipes at Carlisle. PT

You might as well do all the talking you want with you wife today, tomorrow you will have to use hand signals. Two years ago my original side pipes looked like swiss cheese, so I ordered a set of Allen pipes for pick up at Carlisle. Got there paid for the pipes and left them at the booth until I was finished walking around. I ran into a friend who asked what sound pipes I had bought didn't know they made more than one sound level. I ran back to Allens booth and asked the salesman what type I had bought and was told regular - since I didn't know how loud was regular I told the man I wanted the loudest set made for a 65. All I can say is that everyone in my area knows when I leave the house and what time I get home. Still trying to find a girlfriend who wears a hearing aid.

I've been listening to the sweet music of factory side exhaust for 37 years and love it. "Noise" is in the ear of the beholder

I love the sound of my side-pipes on my '66 L-72 and wouldn't trade in for the world. However, on drives of an hour or more it can be some what annoying as times.

Three years ago when I had my car at Bloomington I made plans to meet the original owner at the meet . He is in his 80's and was walking at times with a cane, he ordered the car for a St. Louis plant pick-up. When I asked why he went to St. Louis and then drove the car back to Wisc. he said he just wanted to hear those side pipes. You either love them or hate them.

I agree! I have a very healthy L72 with 3" O.D. SS Side Pipes I installed 7 years ago (my originals are hanging on the wall). The sound is fantastic to my ears and everyone I know likes them as well. My tolerance is a single 2 hour run - then I need some recuperation time or I start to get uncomfortable - would not have that car any other way

I think you all missed the point, If you want the factory sound (mellow tone) then you should look at "Sweet Thunder" on the computer at "Sweet Thunder. com and look at the product made of same material as factory pipes with the correct crumps etc.............................You'll love them and the reproduced sound is great............................Bill

Personally, at my age, I like to be more stealthy and not attract any more attention than necessary. Also, if they don't provide any significant increase in performance, I can't see any advantage in having them other than to make noise. I have lived through that era and my first impression stays with me until today, i.e. they look like some add on from J. C. Whitney to make it a pseudo race car and not factory equipment. The off road system is just fine with me. Guess it's just all a matter of personal taste.

That's not noise, that's music. I never turn on the radio.

I've owned about 15 Vettes and all had side exhaust. I wouldn't have one without. That's why GM came out with the "radio delete" option !!! Side pipes make a more joyfull sound !! But as mentioned in post above, do your talking to the wife before you hit the road as only hand signals will work once moving.

My! What do they call this; "The passion of the Pipes". I knew I could get you guys revved up if I took a negative position.

Reminds me of the story told by our Florida Chapter President about his trips around the country in his driver - a 63 300hp (looks just like mine). One of the biggest kicks they got was going through the tunnels and covered bridges, clutching and rapping off the pipes. One day they did this when some bikers were going by them in the other direction. Guess it about knocked them off their bikes.
