I have an April 68 built car and I am looking for the fasteners that attach the front bumper bracket dust shield to the inner fender. I have what I believe to be original fasteners but have lost a few and I would like to replace them. I called a few of the suppliers for C3 but some say they were stapled, another said it was glued. My fasteners are about 1/2" to 3/4" wide and about 1 1/2" to 2" long, rectangular in shape, two cut out areas top and bottom of a center plug that pushes through the inner fender. Any help or pictures would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: C3 68 Front bumper dust shield on inner fender
I'm assuming that the fasteners I have are correct. It's a 13k mile car and everything around the inner fender looks like it's original so I'd like to try and get them to match if possible. Thanks- Top

There were 3 different designs for the 1968 bumper bracket shields. The first was GM #3922039, the second was GM #3930477, and the third was GM #3947927.
I believe it was the first design that used the retainers you described and this design was used for only a short time at the beginning of the model year. It's possible that the second design also used the retainers, but I can't confirm that. I cannot find the part number for these retainers and I don't think they were ever available in SERVICE. Because of their very limited application, I really doubt that they are reproduced by anyone. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I to have and April built 68. It uses the same retainers a you describe for the dust shields.
Look at Paragon part number 6514. They describe it as:
PR #: 6514GM #: 3795485Radiator seal retainer, w/F.I., service replacement. In Late 1962 this seal was added beside the radiator to help direct air through radiator.
E1968 this was used to attach front outer bumper brace seal to inner skirt.
Sounds like what you are looking for. They don't show a picture of this part on their website.

Re: C3 68 Front bumper dust shield on inner fender
Hi Terry,
I looked at the Paragon part on line, I don't think I've ever seen that part. I notice that the way the fastener holds is the same as the heater hose clips that hold the heater hose to the inner fender of my 71, 350/270. In my case there is a plate riveted to the inner fender with a hole that the 2 'prongs' expand into. In your case do the 'prongs' just expand into the fiberglass or is there a plate?

GM #3795485 was once available in SERVICE, although it was never cataloged for a Corvette application. The only cataloged application I can find for it is 1962-66 Chevrolet series 10, 20, and 30 light trucks where it was used for the air dam retainer. It may very well have been used on Corvettes, though. It was discontinued without supercession in August, 1983.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Here is a picture of the retainers that are on my car. I also attached a picture of paragon part #6514 for comparison.- Top

Well, they're certainly not exactly the same, but they are similar and, apparently, functionally equivalent. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C3 68 Front bumper dust shield on inner fender
Hi Terry,
What shape are the holes in the inner fender? I'd think the prongs on that clip need to be opened into a square hole. Maybe they do hold in a round hole? Thanks!
