Carpet Installation

I purchased carpets from Al Knoch at Carlisle and need some advice as this is my first attempt with installing carpet in my 1963 roadster.

Do I remove one piece at a time and install the new one in its place? After I scrape the old adhesive off, what type do you recommend. Also, would you recommend padding for sound deadening?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I bought the insulating material from Home Depot. It comes in 25 ft roll x 2 ft wide. I did my whole 62 from inside firewall to up under the seats all the way up to the top of the seats. Over the hump and around the shifter. Be careful because you want everything to fit. I pulled out the old carpet which was totally deteriorated underneath and layed out the pieces for reference. On any t*******, measure twice and cut once. Good luck!

It's been 34 years since I did this, but it looks like I'll be doing it again in a couple of years. As I recall, your carpet pieces are cut and have the edges sewn. There is no need to take it out one piece at a time, it only goes in one way. If you lay the pieces out, it will be obvious how they fit. I used a standard mastik to fasten my carpet down in 1974, and it was a bear to pull out last month (it must have been good stuff). I'll do a little research on what the factory used before I install the new carpet. I would not use any insulation or sound deadening material that was not similar to stock, but that's just my preference.

There are a lot of peices on a 63. To make it easier I took digital photos of the carpet as it was coming out. The only area I had difficulty with were the peices that make up the wheel wells in the rear. They are a similar fit in eather direction. Use the old peices for reference. I used a spray contact adheasive and placed 1/2 the carpet then sprayed the second half of the peice and put it into place.

As fas as adhesives goes I would go to an auto upholstery shop and buy the type of adhesive that they used for doing vinyl tops. Use cheap paint brushes. Coat both side and stick. Once stuck there is no moving it.

I found that this worked better for me.

I have'nt checked the AIM, but the CA catalog has a schematic of all the pieces laid out, so you can get an idea of where they go. However, all of this may be moot since I'm sure that the Restorer article will probably answer all of your questions.

My 63 early coupe had no sign of a mastic being used except just below the console on each side.

Jerry,

As far as adhesive removal goes, I would recommend using the 3M Brand General Purpose Weather Strip Cleaner. It can be bought at NAPA for around $16.00/qt. You will need about 2 to 3 quarts. I used scotch brite pads soaked with the cleaner to wet and remove the old glue and then followed with a clean rag soaked with the cleaner to wipe off any residue. ***Be sure to wear rubber gloves and have good ventilation.

Hint... I used a wire brush and a shop vac to remove the residual jute back material that will still be stuck to the floor pan surfaces after pulling off the carpets. Do this before cleaning the glue off.



I used both these products when I replaced the carpeting in my '64 a few years ago and it turned out great. Yes, I know 1964 cars did not have jute under the carpet originally but I made the mistake back in the early 1980's when restoring the car and installed jute under the front carpets.
