    1963 Outside Rear View Mirror

    Although I've shown my 63 SWC a couple of times, it has not been judged. I received a couple of comments that the outside rear view mirror is not correct. It has the bow-tie but something must be wrong. Is the 63 outside rear view mirror different than later years? If so, what's the difference? Is there a spec on the bow-tie? Anything else distinguishable about the mirror?
    Thanks ...

    Millard;

    To the best of my knowledge, only the bases have been known to differ and that was a change made during the model run (early vs. late). Check in Noland Adams "Corvette Restoration & Technical Guide" for 63 through 67, Page 71. It shows the 2 designs and notes the change was made around ser. #111,133. The later one is taller for better visability and has a different shape to the base. Equate your cars s/no. to see which one you should have.

      Hi Millard,

      There should also be a date code on the glass of your mirror.

        63 mirrors and 64 mirrors (made in calendar year 63) ALL originally had a bevel next to the glass retaining snap ring.
        NO repos have this feature. Bob

          Millard, You question could well be answered it you could post some pics of the mirror. Also tell us if its a long base or a short base mirror. Like Jorjorian said though you can close your eyes and see if the mirror is original or not. Just feel for the bevel. Long base mirrors used the thin rubber gasket and the short base mirror used the paper type gasket. Long base mirrors justed a chromed phillips screw and short base mirrors used an allen head screw to hold them on to the bracket. If you have a very early repro or a reworked Chevy one from the 70's then you may have a bowtie that was etched in. John
          P.S. To further explain some of you may remember when the 67 style mirror was still available from GM. You may also remember then that someone was engraving that mirror with a bowtie. Haven't seen one of those for in many a years.
