    Brake Light Problem

I have a '73, and my brake lights don't work. Turn signals work just fine. When I put a test light to both sides of the fuse, I get bright light. Go to the hot side of the brake light switch, good light. Try the brakes, no brake lights. Put the test light on the hot side of the brake light switch, very little to no light. Test both sides of the fuse, again good light. Go back to the hot side of the brake light switch, now I have good light again! Try the brakes and the whole thing starts again. Any ideas? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Possible cause is faulty brake light switch under load.(Brake lights). Try jumpering the leads on the brake switch together. If lights work you've found your problem.

Do the 4 way flashers work as well as the turn signals? What happens when you jumper across the brake light switch terminals? If brake lights work then, replace the switch. If not check wiring in the vicinity of the brake light switch. As usual check any grounds in the rear lighting circuit. Good luck.

Could something in the turn signal switch cause the problem? Even jumping the brake light switch, still the same results. However, after checking the lights one time, when I got back in the car I accidently hit the turn signal lever kinda hard. After that, now the brake lights work!

I noticed a fellow in another forum with a similar problem. He eventually found a shorted turn signal flasher in his system, but first he pulled the steering wheel and cleaned the turn signal contacts. In any case with a new flasher and clean contacts he was back in business. Since the turn signals and brake lights control the same bulbs, checking the contacts in the turn signal switch couldn't hurt.

While I have the steering column out of the car, I think I'll just replace the turn signal switch.

            Thanks for the info!!
