C1 '57 pre-paint questions

Am I correct in the following assumptions:

1. Cowl vent painted off the car or on the passenger floor

2. Seat separator door and hinge (glove box) installed and painted on the car - how many screws used to install hinge and door prior to paint?

3. Lower radio speaker grilles installed and painted dash color

4. Were the above parts dip primed semi-gloss black?

5. What style screws were used for the glove box hinge and door trim mounting, clutch heads?

2. Seat separator door and hinge (glove box) installed and painted on the car - how many screws used to install hinge and door prior to paint? Not sure I'd want to paint on car, see JM info below for screw info
3. Lower radio speaker grilles installed and painted dash color Same color as lower instrument
4. Were the above parts dip primed semi-gloss black? Primered for sure, dipped ?
5. What style screws were used for the glove box hinge and door trim mounting, clutch heads? JM Info follows:

Thanks, Gary. For clarification, would I be correct in assuming the primer used is similar to all the other black primered or dip painted parts, ie, low gloss black? I forgot to include also, is the gas door assy also black primer?

The JM states "There is a rubber bumper attached with glue." This is news. Where is it located, how big, etc?

There was a thread discussing body exterior paint primers on '56-7 earlier this year - May/June timeframe or maybe July. Not sure what primer was used on the seat separate lid and side, but would expect it to be same as was used on the exterior. Conclusion as I recall varied with exterior body color. My Artic Blue '57 had the dark gray almost black primer as well as a known Cascade Green car did. While some others in that thread had red oxide primer. The rubber bumper is shown in the AIM. It's like a flattened piece of rubber hose that slips over the door stop for the seat separator compartment lid. Gary....

My Polo White had dark gray primer from factory. It first wore through on the gas lid on the raised area under which your finger goes to raise the lid.

Rod, answers to your questions. Your SPAM filter rejected my e-mail.

GM required some kind of coating/finish on all parts to keep the parts from rusting. This could range from an oiled surface to a primered surface. Haven't really pursued body parts such as the package compartment door or the gas door, so I've always assummed there were primered from the manufacturer. What with I don't have a clue. Whatever it was it was a cheap I don't care kind of protective coating.

The "package compartment" door stop is a small lip that's rubber covered. Unfortunately, I'm at my photo limit or would've posted an AIM crop showing the door stop/bumper.


What was posted will be in the "revised" 56-7 JM section on the Seat Separator & Package Compartment. Changes are that all four of the lower screws were painted and there were no star washers on any of the lid screws.
