    74 Bb Fuel Pump

I started putting my new fuel pump on, when I noticed that it was not going on evenly. The top is closer to the block that the bottom. I have the fuel pump push rod all the way in. The only thing I can think of is that the push rod is at its apex. So then my question is, do I keep tightening the bolts to the pump, pushing the lever down and making the pump flush with the block?

Also, on the rocker arms is there a set torque for tightening them down?

Make sure that the fuel pump pushrod is at its most RETRACTED position (i.e. pushrod on the base circle of the camshaft eccentric) before you try to install the pump.

Ther is no set torque value for rocker arm nuts. They are simply tightened until the required clearance (mechanical lifters) or preload (hydraulic lifters) is reached. The nuts MUST be either stock, self-locking type or aftermarket mechanical locking type (i.e. "polylock").

How do I know if I have the fuel pump push rod fully retracted? Is there a way to ensure this?

        TODD-

When I did my S.B. pump all you have to do is when the pump is off turn the engine over with a breaker bar / socket on the balancer bolt while your finger pushes up against the fuel pump push rod and you'll feel the rod go up and then start back down. Back off until it goes back up to it's furthest inward point. Take the push rod out, apply a heavy grease such as wheel bearing grease to the shaft and reinstall. The grease will help hold the push rod in the upward position while you install the pump and gasket. Be quick, the grease won't hold for too long and good luck.
