    58 Distr. vac line

Do early and late cars vac line come around to front bottom of 1x4 carb from Distr. with plug in back,230 horse? Some confusion on 101925 Dec 14 car, being early or late. Adams book says fuel pump was changed in Nov of 57, and Hood support dont recall, I dont see in 57 E58 Aim where vac line goes to and does it matter either and or for performance? Prep for new motor vs 327. Thanks Brad.

      Brad,

Here are my best guesses since no one else has chimed in. I'd say that your Dec. 14 car would qualify as "early 58" but, of course, the factory changed things as they pleased with no regard for early or late.

I believe that 1958 base engines used a vacuum line that connected to a plug on the back center of the carb. There is a fitting that sticks out from one of the six sides of the hex plug that the vacuum line for the distributor goes to.

59-60 had a hollow carb stud on rear driver side of the intake manifold that the distributor vacuum line went to.

        Brad,

Let me beg off on a senior moment for my earlier comment. The rubber hose to the fitting on the back is for the windshield washer if so equipped. The distributor vacuum line is steel and goes from the passenger front of the carb back to the distributor.

Hey Bob,That's just I was looking for, I would love to have a bunch of pics like that in all areas of the engine compartment to see exactly how to put it together, kind of like having another car side by side to copy the 230 horse 1x4. Thanks and any one else out their with some good pics would be helpful. thanks Brad.

            Brad,

If you ever need info on a specific item, post it and I'll see if I can find a pic and maybe others will have a better pic.

BTW, leave your green spring on for judging, but put a black one on later. I'm convinced that the original carb springs were black (plated of some sort, not painted) and that the green ones showed up in 61-62 and were service replacements for the earlier cars.
