73 - L48 engine not started for long time

I've had my car on jackstands for quite some time while I had the rear trailer arms rebuilt, struts rebushed, replaced brake lines, etc. Is there anything I should do to try and help lubricate the engine before I try and turn it over as I'm sure every trace of oil is in the pan by this time. Thanks for your help. Joe 46306

    Joe,

How long? Many of us up north go 6 months without driving our cars.

If you're concerned, you can buy a "pre-oiler" or oil pump primer from a company such as Summit Racing. This is used by removing your distributor, and then using a hand drill with the pre-oiler to work your engine's oil pump. After a few seconds your oil is up to pressure and you're good to go.

Thanks Patrick, I'd say 9 - 12 months I've had it up on stands. Joe 46306

That's not long enough to worry about the oil. Prime the carb, turn the key and off you go.

For reference, I witnessed a fleets of engine being torn down after three YEARS of inactivity. The bearings were still dripping wet.

I was talking to a guy today who is taking a family car out of storage (it was just parked, battery, etc,. all still in it) after 7 years and said he is going to start it. Other than changing all fluids and filters what else should he do? The Camaro has a 350 in it I believe and is in a garage where it was parked all those years ago.

My brother "just started" his 86 Vette after some 10 years of inactivity (I learned of that just afterwards - otherwise I'd told him to do differently, or at least be there to watch)... Astonishing enough that worked pretty well - unbelievable!
