    Sal,

    Yes, you will need a 5 qt oil pan to provide clearance. The 6 qt will interfere with the power steering assembly.

      ...and the good news is the 5 quart pan is available in an excellent reproduction; the 6 quart pan is not. So, the "direction that one wants to go" is from 6 quart to 5 quart; not 5 quart to 6 quart.

        And the question in 1965 gets to be "When Chevrolet got around to making their 3rd announcement about the availabiltiy of PS with the L76 and L79", were ALL of those engines from that point built with the smaller pan? #23561 was L79, TI & PS and had the small pan.

          Loren,

          I'm not sure about early 65 L79, and some may very well have come with the 6 qt. pan. However, L76 was the solid lifter version and retained the 6 qt. pan through the end of the model year, when the option was dropped for 66.

            Something to consider if you car is investment grade. When you install PS to your 365 hp car, the lock washers that are part of the hardware will scuff the inside channel of your frame and the bracket will leave marks on the exterior side of the frame. Down the road, if you chose to sell the car, people in the know could possibly have issues with these marks and challenge the validity of a 365 hp car. Just something to think about.

                Sal;

                Is your steering set up like my 63 with the two positions for the tie rod ends? If so, do you have it set in the fast (inner) position or slow (outer) position? I have always had mine set up for fast steering (big deal), so I don't know if the slow position would help much. I always figured it would be a good way to keep women away from wanting to drive the car, Ha! And you know how they mob you for a ride, right?!

                Mine improved a great deal with radials at driving speeds, but slow/stop speed turning is still a bear. Being an old guy, I think of it as macho like the truck drivers of old 30's and 40's.

                  Your funny. I will try to change the steering rods hope that will help.
                  Thank you so much for your time
