    Original Seat Back Panels

What's a good product to use for removing the paint / dye from a set of original 74 seat back panels. They're black now and need to be oxblood. I'm concerned about the texture of the fiberglass being affected. THANKS

    Hi Marty,
I would think the citrus based paint removers would be gentle on the surface of the seat back panel. Maybe an old tooth brush to help work the paint/dye out of the grain pattern.

For many years, the SERVICE seat backs available from GM were all black with instructions "paint to match". So, it may very well be that you don't need to do any paint removing---just paint them the correct color with interior paint/dye.

I would wipe them down with some plastic prep and start putting on coats of paint/dye a little at a time till I liked the finish.

          JOE-
I tried some thinner on the inside of the panel and it's painted or dyed, the rag showed paint on it.
          THANKS.

Yes, they may well be painted. That's how they were supplied in SERVICE, too. But, the GM instructions were to "paint as required". That implies they understood that they were painted black but the installer should OVERPAINT them whatever color is required. I think that you'll have a VERY difficult time removing paint from these panels due to the "textured finish". You may end up with a mess if you try. I would follow Lyle's painting advice. Test the paint you decide to use first on the INSIDE of the panels to make sure there is no compatibility problem before you paint the outside. If there is a compatibility problem, it will cause the underlying black paint to "crinkle". I don't think you'll have this problem with panels painted 30 years ago, though.
