Without refering to the trim tag, what clues can I look for to confirm I have a st louis body?

Re: 67 vette trim tag?, st louis body?
How about the black out paint details of the hood latches/catches? If the car hasn't been 'restored' by prior owners, these parts should reflect the different treatment used by AO Smith vs. St. Louis in terms of black-out paint coverage.- Top

Re: 67 vette trim tag?, st louis body?
Hi Jack, Thanks for responding. This car has been body off restored to a high level, but not ncrs standards. Blackout no longer exists.- Top

Re: 67 vette trim tag?, st louis body?
On a St. Louis body, the riveted-on underbody reinforcements, rear vertical bulkhead reinforcement, radiator support, and the steel reinforcement under the front surround panel will be dip-primed black; on an A.O. Smith body, those items will show green zinc chromate as the first layer of paint.
The upper front inner door panel will show two pop-rivets on a St. Louis body, and two flat-head aluminum body rivets on an A.O. Smith body - photos below.- Top

Re: 67 vette trim tag?, st louis body?
look on the door jamb fiberglass: if st louis body and it DOES NOT have power windows, there will be dimples in the glass to advise the line worker where the power window conduit would be present. obviously, if the car came with power windows, this won't help differentiate the ao smith from a st louis body as the assembly line worker would have drilled the glass for the conduit. AO Smith on-power window door jamb fiberglass lack the two dimples, ie, the fiberglass is smooth and lacking dimples.mike- Top

Re: 67 vette trim tag?, st louis body?
However, Blackouts, zinc primers, and doors can be and often are changed. The dimples in the door jams are not absolute. I have see some AOS with the dimples, so that is not fool proof. There is probably not one feature that could not be changed, But, there are a couple of obscure places, where, short of a total body rebuild, are usually not touched.Last edited by Wayne W.; September 12, 2008, 11:09 PM.- Top
