What Should be Painted on 67 Exhaust - Anything?

What if any parts should be painted on a standard 327/300hp exhaust system and how? Thanks.

Since I worked at St. Louis in 1967 and am familiar with what little remained at that time of the traditional chassis blackout process, the sides and some of the rear of the mufflers got blackout spray, with some overspray on the sides of the spare tire tub.

Yes, I'm working on getting the references to "mitting" the entire exhaust system removed from the JG's.

Thank you John. I don't feel like doing it "right" twice.

        John,

Should the exhaust pipes also exhibit some degree of blackout?

Will the exxhaust backout on the 1965 be much different from 1967?

I'm curious to see John's response to the '65 exhaust question. The '65 JG provides that the entire underside of the exhaust system is blacked out.

I wasn't there in 1965, but Phil Hawkins and George Barlos (St. Louis Process and Tool engineers) told me in 1967 that the blackout spray process had been the same for several years. It was done in the last station on the Chassis line, just before Body Drop, with airless spray guns fed by Johnstone pumps in 55-gallon drums of cheap chassis-black paint. In the C1 years, it was much more extensive, but that's another story.

The key point is that there was never any "mitting" application of blackout paint - never happened, although that story has taken on a life of its own.

              John H,

Sounds that the blackout process was basicaly the same for 1965 through 1967. This answers the mufflers and the spare tire tub. What about the exhaust pipes?

              Thanks,

              John S.

For 67 the bottom surface of the muffler and some pipe had black out, but burned off the pipes right away. Say you sprayed the muffler from back to front and got it on the pipes for about a foot from the front of the muffler. I understand the effect was to hide the shinny steel mufflers from the rear view of the car, the pipes just got over spray. Earlier years coated the entire system.
