    Rear Springs

Whoever was running my 57 (#4176) in the late 60s moved the rear axle back a few inches. To do that they messed up the leafs and the shock plates.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the difference in ride on 4-leaf vs. 5-leaf suspensions (if any).

Was the 5-leaf all or part of RPO#684, the heavy duty racing suspension?

    Thanks in advance.

The 5 leaf is too stiff for street use (unless you're in your 20s!). You will feel like your seat belt is cutting you in half on a big bump.

      Re: Rear Springs

I have switched between four and five leaf springs on my '57 a few times because I just like to change it. The five leaf are more firm than my original four, but due in part to the fact the original springs were made in '56 and on most of its life and have lost some curve, etc. For me it is a matter of choice. If you do install the five leaf also install the front HD springs as you will get more balanced handling. I used to autocross the '57 in the late 60's and 70's with the HD springs, quick steering adapter, etc. and it was great-----but you have to learn to steer with the accelerator!

I agree with Bill, the 5 leaf is way to stiff for street use. I'd compare it to riding a rigid frame Harley, cool when you are 20, but kind of hard on this old body.

          Thanks, I think I'll go with 4.

I spent most of this summer taking the car apart and probably will need another year and a half to get it back together so I don't envision alot of hard driving.
