    ex-fighter pilot, POW, Corvette driver

Ran into this old acquaintance at the ALMS races. John Fitch: ex-fighter pilot, POW, Corvette driver, American hero. He reminds me of another ex-fighter pilot, POW, Corvette driver and American hero in the current news. John McCain. I wonder what Barrack Hussein Osama drives. Anyone know?

Geoff, recently Motor Trend magazine sent a letter to several major political candidates, asking what kind of car they drove. Here's their list of Democratic candidate's personal cars.:

    Democrats
Sen. Joe Biden (Del.) - no response
Sen. Chris Dodd (Conn.) - Ford Escape Hybrid
John Edwards (former U.S. senator, N.C.) - 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid, silver
Sen. Mike Gravel (former U.S. senator, Ak.) - no response
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) - no response
Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) - Chrysler 300
Gov. Bill Richardson (N.M.) - no response
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) - no response

John McCain, by the way, responded that his personal car is a Cadillac CTS.

I believe John McCain used to drive a Corvette in his youth, but I have not seen any evidence to indicate he is currently a Corvette Owner.

I thought I heard that Biden drove a '67! Can you honestly believe some politician actually drives a '67 on a consistent basis - enough to actually make that claim?

During the prelude to McCains acceptance speach, it was mentioned he drove a Corvette. He's got my vote (not for that reason only).

I remember that Chip Miller once had Joe Biden's '67 in the Chip's Choice display years ago. A Goodwood Green small block convertible if my memory is correct.

You're absolutely right. For their service to our country and as POW's, both your friend and John McCain are unquestionably American Heros and should be honored by all Americans. However, that service doesn't entitle anyone to be handed the Presidency. They still have to be elected by the American people.

By the way the name is Obama. But I'm sure that was just a typo on your part.

                  Henry

P.S. Joe Biden does drive a green 67. There was an extensive thread about it on the CF (I think) last week or so.

Re: ex-fighter pilot, POW, Corvette driver

McCain was not a "fighter pilot" He was an attack pilot. He flew the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, which is a small, subsonic "attack" aircraft. Back when the first models entered service in the fifties, it was the smallest aircraft in our inventory that could carry a nuclear weapon.

Despite being subsonic it is the only aircraft type I know of that actually once shot itself down with its own guns - 20 mm cannon in this case - when due to an unusual set of circumstances it "caught up" with its own cannon fire. The incident occurred in the fifties, and there was a detailed write-up in Time Magazine including an illustration of how it happened. I remember it to this day because it was so strange!

Even the New York Times recently published a correction to their referral to McCain as a "fighter pilot" - over 30 years ago.

                      Duke:

What are you trying to say; McCain shot himself down over North Vietnam? WOW!, that's pretty profound! (just pullin ur leg). Guess if he had anything to do over again, he'd probably have paid more attention during Parachute training. I have the video from when my son's went through it at Reese AFB and it was pretty intense. They also went through Survival training which includes a lot of what was learned from Viet Nam. My one son came out of that with his entire chest and arms full of bruises. You could say John McCain and his fellow POW's experiences helped write the book on that, and a lot of todays pilots are better prepared because of it.

                            Hi Stu,

I went through the Navy's version of this training as well while in the Marine Corps and it is quite impressive. Former Vietnam POW Doug Hegdahl is one of the instructors.

I can't speak for the Air Force version, but the Navy certainly invested a lot of time and thought into the program, and it was very effective in the classroom and in the field training.

I have a lot of respect for the sacrifices of John McCain, and all our other former POWs (as well as all vets, for that matter).

                            Semper Fidelis,
                            Joel
