    Stolen C1 gas caps at Carlisle

    People on the CF talk about stolen gas caps=

    I hate to say this but most parts are stolen by Corvette people that need the part or know the value to re-sell them. I know most NCRS guys hate accessories but GM dealers in the 50's sold a locking gas cap like the C2's accessories . I use this then put the original on at judging while I'm near it then take it off. The original C1 gas cap now goes for around $300.00. Remember Corvette guys know the value and rarity of a part not a Ford guy.

    I have had a locking cap for many years that I got from a Chevy dealer. It basically has a flat top surface with a key slot in the center, nothing fancy but it is chrome. I only recently replaced it for operation with a unit having the PRV in it in an attempt to cut down on my evaporation/fumes (may help, not sure yet). But, I will carry the locking cap to apply at cruisins and shows, etc. I went through the gas crisis during the Carter 70's and it was common for the siphon boys to drain you dry.

        I have one just like that that I took off of my 72. Is it, by chance, a Briggs & Stratton key?

          Yes it is a B&S key -- but you don't need the key to open it. I won't tell you how here, but it requires no tools.

            Unfortunately, C1 caps weren't the only ones stolen. I heard reports there of several instances of C2 caps taken also, off of cars and vendors tables. Happened last year also. Security at Carlisle was concerned.

              Roy;

              That's the animal I have alright. I never liked it all that well as I can not feel the key move much at all, then all of a sudden it lets loose. Never thought it was all that secure, but it makes a good deterent. Then too, who'd want it as, in itself, it probably has little value. I just don't want any sugar in my tank, thank you very much.

                I got one too back in the day for my '71. How do the judges look upon
                this type of cap? Deductions as not assembly line original

                Terry, I will not drop a dime on how to open it.

                  Repop gas caps for 53 to 55 were selling for $275.00 at Carlisle. I saw an original with an asking price of $750.00

                    Ken,

                    The judges look on it just as you suggest -- NOT TFP.

                    Just my nickel.

                      This cap is applicable to any 1963 to 1969 Corvette. A similar non-vented locking cap was used for 1970-74.

                        That is the same cap (and box) I got when I picked up my Corvette in February 1970. As I recall the later version has a dimpled top surface.
