on a '61, is there any way to do a "bench" check on the dash wiper switch and on the pump on top of the washer reservoir? I don't have everything reassembled yet so I can't do a "live" check but would like to know if I am going to have to replace any of it.

Re: '61 wiper/washer working?
The Trico vacuum based washer pump is a tricky devil to get working properly! DEATH to these pumps is being left sitting dry for extended period(s) of time.
Internal gaskets dry out and sliding surface friction increases. The amount of vac available, even with the car's storage tank + check valve, was what I'd call marginal for the application to begin with (very little design safety margin).
Quite frequently restorers TEAR their hair out trying to get used original pumps working again. Plus, getting them to work to Performance Verification standards (so many squirts/wet sweeps followed by so many dry sweeps then final wiper shut down) is an even taller order!
We finally gave up 'hoping' for the best and blowing hours of mechanic time at our shop 'dinking' with the various components. Now, we simply ship the ENTIRE system (wiper motor, switch, vac reservoir and washer pump) out to a professional for total restoration (you'll find Maxwell advertizes in the services section of NCRS Driveline magazine) and bite the bullet on cost....- Top
