I can't tell you about 1973s, but I suggest you take a look at the NCRS Specifications guide or the Black Book. 1972 shows the number of cars with Special paint. SOME of those were in primer some were black paint.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it isn't many either way (20-something for 1972 I think). The other early C3 years are not called out, but I have seen 1970 and 1971 with SPEC on the trim tag. One has to do a careful forensic examination to determine the original finish without authentic paperwork.

The 1968-69 and 1970-72 TIM&JG instruct the judges to assume a car with SPEC or SPECIAL on the trim tag was delivered in primer unless the owner presents proof of another finish.

If trim tag says "SPEC" Should be zero deduct for paint color

I own a 1963 corvette convertible factory air ( a very rare car) with a PRIME option on the trim tag. Car was ordered by a MO supreme court judge for his wife who wanted it to be painted DARK BROWN of all colors.

Not sure how many 63 vettes came with prime tag.

I worked at in a Chevrolet dealer body shop . We got 2 74s in primer . All rubber and small trim was silver and the body gray primer . They were covered in dirty hand prints when delivered. No wash job at the factory . They also had two dashes on the trim tag instead of a code . Both were painted AMC purple.
