    54 Carter YH carb

    To 54 experts that I know are out there;
    I have rebuilt my 54 YH carbs several times before, but this time one particular part has deteriorated, and is not usable as is. The items involved are #121-246 Pump Lifter Link Gasket (rubber) and #136-177 Pump Lifter Link Washer (thin metal) that fits over the long length side of the Pump Lifter Link #117-164 before it is inserted into the bowl body. (Refer to an OLD Carter instruction sheet, the new kit sheet meant for the Corvair do not show this piece) It would appear from it size and location to be a trivial part. I have posted pictures here:

      I plan to make a replacement as soon as I can find the right, modern fuel resistant, 1/16th inch rubber sheet (nitrile? neoprene?). It seems to me the only purpose of this moveable gasket is to minimize fuel spill from the bowl sloshing out of the Lifter Link passage to the outside of the carb, dripping it close to the hot manifolds and the potential for fire which in fact is not trivial!

      Your right early kits did have it but not that important if not there.that may be the reason it's not in a kit anymore. Your right about little attention, articles, info, or answers for 54 to 55 . All must be restored or little interest , C2's dominate here, not a bad thing but that's how it is.You now as I do keep a list of 54-55 owners to e-mail for info or parts. I get many e-mail's from people on the 55's.
      We're getting fewer each year.

        Roy, Clem,
        I suspect that my problem comes from the modern formulation of gasoline. I have not had a problem with this rubber part in the past 40 years of ownership, but this time it was "melted" to a point that there were beads of it stuck on the lifter link and barb bowl slot making it very sluggish to operate.

        I have another carb question. The original Carter kits contained an asbestos like gasket called the flange gasket #1A-78. I have never used it, there was none on the car when I got it, and I've had no problem by that. It is shaped like the bakelite insulator so would be easy to see on a car since the carb base is more irregular shape but I don't recall seeing any on another car. I don't know yet if the kits I just ordered will have these. Maybe this gasket belongs between the insulator and the manifold? Do you have a clue?

          Again your right but today Asbestos is out-law' d like the exshaust gaskets. Just another thing that that cant be as it left the factory . You sound like a detail nut that I'm too.I dislike any repro item on my 55 unless there is no other way to go. I'm always looking for the real thing and replace any repro item I had to use on my 55. It toke me time but 95% of my 55 is original new or used. Cant help using repro rubber .tires and interior material .
