    Lift Questions

I'm thinking about getting a lift for my garage and I've read the previous posts but I have 2 questions for the group:

    1. Many of the lift manufacturers now claim that they are certified by ETL/ALI. Does anyone know what they test? I looked on their website but couldn't find any good information on the tests they perform. Did this certification make a difference to anyone in selecting a lift?
    2. Does anyone have the rolling jacks that can be purchased with the lifts and if so how do they work? A friend of mine has a BendPak lift with a rolling jack and he said that it doesn't work very well with his Vette (a 71) because the frame of the car is so close to the lift runway that it's difficult to get the jack to lift the frame without hitting the car's floorpan.

    Thanks for any feedback.

Mat, contact Mark Tulley - you can send him an e-mail from his TDB profile. He's in the business, helps with the NCRS lifts and probably can make you an offer you can't refuse. Gary....

Matthew , Did yoou ever make a chice on a lift? I'm currently looking. I also have looked alot but the site give little photo's and info. Also the numbers they use makes it hard to tell. My friend has a Bendpak he says he parks his 2007 Z06 but he has the wide lift. I have looked at Stinger - Bendpak - Dannmar - and a few others.

Hi Michael - I have not bought a lift yet. THe economy has put that on hold for a little while. One lift I was interested in was the Direct Lift from Greg Smith Equipment. I also like the Rotary Revolution but I can't really justify the high price. I'm hoping to get some extra cash this summer and get a lift. You never know, there might be some good deals out there.

I had a Stinger lift and had no problems but I needed a taller lift to fit my truck under it and sold that to a friend and bought a Classic Lift. Seems a bit beefier than the stinger but does the same job. The Vette is so low that you really cant get a jack on the center jack plate of the lift but I did use the scissor jack on the frame when I had to take a wheel off when on the lift.

Drive on lifts are pretty worthless for anything but changing oil and muffler work. Unless you just want it for a parking lot, get one that lets the wheels go loose.

Mathew, I see you are from NH. Check out "Tec lifts" in Attleboro, Ma. I bought a 4 post lift from them for my garage. Excellent lift and great people to deal with. They delivered and installed the lift at my house. Reasonable and it has been a terrific lift. They were the people who supplied the lifts at the National Convention in Marlboro, Ma. a couple of years ago. They come with jack trays. If you can buy locally you avoid the inherent difficulties and problems with long distance vendors. Good luck.

                Matt

Here's another option from BendPak, if your aim is not to store cars, but rather be able to work underneath them. It is a free-standing scissor lift that will put the car in the about 4.5 feet. It is not the most convenient lift in the world, as the scissor internals are under the car, but one can still get to everything fairly easily. It has a dolly so that it can move around the garage. There are still those of us whose garages do not have enough ceiling height to install a 4 post lift or a 4 arm swing out lift, and this is a perfect option for us.

I.m sorry I have to disagree. I have done a whole lot more that change oil and muffler work under mine. I'm not saying a two post dosen't have advantages, just that your quote is not true. And I take the wheels off on mine all the time.

                    Re: Lift Questions

MATT As suggested by Gary send me a e-mail. But in general I will attempt to answer some of your questions. ETL/ALI is a independent testing facility for automotive lifts. It is owned and funded by its many members. In order to earn the gold label certificate, the lifts are put through numerous tests designed for osha and national ansi standards. The load capacity ,electrical and mechanical systems are tested.
The problems with most of the imported lifts occur because they are just copies of the american designs and not built to a national standard
By the way the revolution lift and direct lift, both made in china are owned by the rotary lift company. In order to be ALI certified all componets and options have to be tested also. Most rolling jacks are not certified therefore voiding the certification of the lift.
On most four post lifts you can buy a low profile sliding jack beam.I have sold many of these and they will work even with the new ZO6. You have to use a low profile jack with it.
I also agree that you should buy whatever lift from a known company,
parts availabilty and service are very important. Just remember it is your life under the lift and your prized corvette on the top of it .

For what it is worth I purchased a Back-Yard Buddy several years ago and I am as pleased as I can be. It is a little more expensive but is as solid as a rock and I have absolutely no fear when I am under the car. It is quite heavy and takes two to assemble but other than that it is great.

                        Re: Lift Questions

Just like everything in life, there are many choices and many opinions. For my situation, I have a 4 post lift (extended height 12' ceilings) and absolutely love it. I have a mid engine car in addition to my Vette, and to do service on it, the lift does a lot of up and down, and knowing that the car is firmly planted on the rails of the 4 post, is quite a reassurance to me, especially if I need to reef and pry on fasteners. I have two sliding trays that I use a bottle jack and jackstands to lift a tire off from the lift as required. I have long drive on ramps, and have no problem with putting a car up on the deck of the lift.

We all have our opinions and I truly doubt that a anyone could prove his or her lift was hands down a better choice. I like my stinger and will probably purchase another one. You do need a jack bridge to do some work involving wheel removal or transmission work. I have not used the casters but a stinger lift is an excellent choice.

Just wondering what everyone thinks of the kwik lift? I was thinking of getting one as my garage is to low for a 2 or 4 post lift.

Just had a 2 post lift installed. Using it for a bodylift on a c 1 right now, will have pictures later as I have not seen anyone show how to do it with a lift. Its a TK9BPT

When talking to the sales people he made it a point to say that using a 2 post with a c-5 c-6 must be done carefully as using the wrong lifting points will twist the frame/body.
