If the radiator cap (no expansion tank) is not up to par, say a cracked pressure ring. What would be the symptoms if any?

Jack -

A poor pressure seal would allow the coolant to boil at a lower temperature; you might note "puking" through the overflow hose during hot-soak after shutdown where you had none previously.
