    C- 3 1977 Corvette Smog (A.I.R.) Pump

I have a 1977 L-48, which does not appear to have ever had an A.I.R. Pump. Am I correct to assume that it did not originally come with one? When searching reference manuals, it appears that CA cars and L-82's had them. Am I missing something here?
    Thanks!

I'm away from my references right now so I can't confirm it, but I believe that 1977 L-48 with federal emissions did not use the air injection reactor emissions control system.

Sounds kindof odd to me! Why should ANY car from the mid 70s be left without such an environmental-device by the factory?
To my knowledge (which - as always - might be limited here) ALL 77s have been delivered with the AIR-equipment...

At least I would consider it far more probable that it has been removed from your car by some previous owner.

It depends on how that L48 power team was configured...transmission, motor (engine suffix) and emission system type. As you point out, all L82's were equipped with A.I.R. along with L48s configured for California along with high altitude emission systems.

Apparently only an L48 with automatic tranny was not equipped with the GM 7801149 A.I.R. pump. It carried the AY emission label GM# 460125 and an engine suffix code of CLA. So L48s 4-speed cars were equipped along with high altitude and CA cars.

Check your emission label and engine suffix. If it reconciles with that described, than your L48 is configured correctly.

Even the L48 auto was equipped with an emission system...it was called the "controlled combustion system (CCS) and controlled emissions by a lean mixture, spark retard, and distributor calibration rather than hardware.

CCS was introduced in 1971 and served as a method to reduce the cost for emission control on lower horsepowered motors and was used through 1979. The LS5 used CCS and some L48's over the years. But high output motors required devices to control emissions. Eventually, computer systems would take over the calibrations that hardware was pressed into duty to perform.

Thanks to all that responded. The original owner indicated that he never removed any smog equipment, and said that he did not think that there was any on it when purchased. Yes, it is a L-48 Auto, with the codes mentioned previously.

To add to what Tom said if you don't know the code for the emission label just look for the AIR on the label to see if the car should have it.

There were quite a few Corvette (and, other) powertrain combinations during the mid to later 70's that did not use the AIR system. They achieved their emissions requirements through other means.
