    clutch adjustment

    ok all I have a 69 with a 350 and muncie 4 speed and I can't seem to get it into reverse when I run the vehicle for awhile. Just starting the vehicle up from neutral into reverse is ok but after driving for awhile when parking it will not go into reverse without grinding, I normally just shut the car off then put it into reverse. Any suggestions

    Kevin,

    Sounds like the clutch is either wore out or needs adjustment.

      Kevin;

      Try the adjustment first. It is simple - just follow any instruction pertaining to your year Corvette. Also, make sure you don't have too many thicknesses of floor mats, i.e. Carpet + carpeted floor mat + rubber floor mat. I do run that many on occasion and I too have to really bury my foot into the pedal to keep it from grinding, though mine is more when it is cold rather than hot. If my car sits for a couple of weeks I have to pop the pedal a few times as the driven disc has a tendency to stick to the flywhell and the pressure plate. Mine has the original clutch in it yet with about 44.5k miles on it.

        If memory serves, it's a 'cockpit' problem that once you train yourself on goes away... There is no synchro for reverse. So, force yourself to shift into first gear and THEN move the shift lever to reverse!

          Jack;

          You are right of course, but I just never thought of it. As a matter of SOP, I always shift into first before going into reverse. It's one of the things I do w/o thinking. Something like walking, or scratching my behind. Guess it comes natural to us who have been driving 4-speeds for 50 years.
