C2 Repro Tire Sizing and Source

This is a new post of a question I listed yesterday along with a query about repro tire vendors:

    First:
There have been several discussions about the current repro bias ply tires not fitting the spare tire tubs. I was recently made very aware of the issue when I purchased a 775x15 Firestone which would not fit. Yesterday I picked up an older repro at Carlisle which fits fine. The diameter difference between the two tires is an inch - I can't believe it!

My question to this board is if I purchase the current repros that are available for driving and judging purposes, will I run into an clearance problems on the car itself - it's a '65 roadster.

    Second:
I noted some posts that indicated problems with Coker repro tires. Are there any opinion on tires from Universal Tire in Hershey, PA - specifically Firestones.

    Thanks,

    Dave Brown

Search the archives, but I think that you will find the Kelsey Goodyears the best tire for judging purposes.

Boy Dave, I wish I would have seen this earlier. I just picked up 4 Firestones from Coker yesterday.

        Tony,

When you get your tires mounted I would be curious to know the overall diameter. Per my original post, the first repro tire I had purchased which did not fit the spare tire tub was from Universal Tire. The overall diameter measured to the peak of the tread is 28 1/4". I have to believe all these tires are sourced from one factory somewhere and marketed by these various companies we recognize. I'd appreciate knowing your results.

          Dave,

You shouldn't have any clearance issues on the car for any of the currently available repro tires. I have also had issues with repros fitting in the spare tire tub. However, the Goodyear Power Cushions seem to fit just fine. It's a snug fit, but no problems getting it in/out.
