    If I was a betting man -- and I'm not -- I would go with Zinc at least until we have chemical analysis of enough gas caps to make a positive call.

    AND yes, I know what the judging guides say.

      I agree with Terry. Every gas cap I have restored has been zinc plated. Zinc and cad are incompatible, and I have never had a problem plating over the original plating. When I bead blast to prep the part for plating, I do not remove all of the original plating as it is not necessary to do so. If the original plating was cad, I would have a real mess in the plating tank and would probably have to replace my solution. Fortunately, that hasn't happened yet!
