    62 tie-down for towing

I will be towing my 62 about 1400 miles from South Texas to Streator, IL on an open trailer. What are the best points to attach hold-down straps on the frame or axle?

John definitely on the frame. Check the archives, this subject has been discussed many times.

I agree with Art that this has been discussed many times. Although I have not found anything specific to the solid axle cars.

I did post a thread asking for the locations on the car specific to the cars with trunks. Sadly there was no satisfactory response.

Dan and John, I have not investigated the C-1 tie down locations, BUT I'm sure that they are there......someplace. GM used what is called an "R" hook to transport their cars and trucks to the dealers. The R hooks fit into a slotted hole about 1 inch by 1 1/2 inch. These holes generally have a backing plate inside the frames that can be felt with your pinkie finger. The C-2s are located in the bottom of 3rd cross member............there are two such holes in that location, the one with the downward metal flange is the reinforced one. The fronts are a few inches from the front frame, on the side of the frame rail and are at a slight angle rearward.
I'm pointing out the C-2 location so you can get an idea where to look on the C-1s.
        I hope this helps

I have looked at a number of C1 frames, and I have not been able to see a tie-down location. I could easily be missing it, and looking at a bare frame is a lot different than the whole car. I hope some C1 enthusiast will reveal this secret to us.

Since no replies, I will be blocking the front/rear tires with 2x4's attached w/drywall screws to the wood deck, and try to cross-tie the rear axle to some D-rings in the deck. Also drive very carefully! If anyone can make it to the "cruiser night" in Streator, IL. I'll see you there.

On C1s I like to run straps around the rear differential housing ( be careful to avoid the brake lines) and run the ratchet tiedowns straight back to the tiedown rings.
On the front put the straps through the lower a-arm and cross the ratchet tiedowns to the tiedown rings.
I never found a need for wheel blocks.

Where on the car are you attaching the front tie-down?

                  John,
I loop the strap through the lower a-arm and then attach to the ratchet tiedown. This has worked well for me many times. When towing stop frequently and check the tightness of the 4 tiedowns.

My round trip of 1300+ miles each way went without a problem. The trailer had a wood floor with tie-downs. The tie-downs had an "s"type hook on each end with a ratchet. I cross-tied the rear with one end of the hook in the holes of the rear crossmember and the other end to the tie-down ring and then to the other side. I cross-tied the front with one end attached to outer end of the "A" frame and then other to the tie-down ring. Just for overkill I attached a couple of pieces of 2x4 to the floor with drywall screws to block the front and rear tires.

                      Re: 62 tie-down for towing

Back in 1976, I had my 62 brought back from CA to Ohio by a professional car hauler who moved cars for a well known corvette broker. I assume they put hooks over back edge of the two lower A-arms. I picked up the car, signed the release and a few weeks later discovered that I had two ripped lower a-arms. My loss. Fortunately my good friend in CA had a 54 sedan that was a parts car and I took the opportunity to replace the springs and rebuild the front end. Don't use the lower a-arms for a tie down.
