Re: 68 VIN 7193's Block on Ebay?
Nope - the "1" as the first character in the VIN derivative is for Chevrolet. A "7" in that position would be a GM of Canada VIN.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-...mZ300250247092
But shouldn't the VIN derivative begin with a 7 instead of a 1 ?- Top

Hmmm ... My Corvette Black Book (2000 Edition) shows 1968 VIN numbers ran from 194378S400001 to 194378S428566, with convertibles having a fourth digit as a 6. What gives?- Top

You're confusing the legitimate VIN number (only appears ONE place on a car and that's the VIN plate) for the "VIN DERIVATIVE" that's stamped in various locations including the engine stamp pad, transmission, and frame.- Top

Jack - my complete VIN on my VIN plate is 194670S409753. See the first picture below. My VIN derivative on my engine pad is 70S409753, as shown in the second and third picture. Why would this 68 show a different first digit on the derivative when mine doesn't?- Top

Re: 68 VIN 7193's Block on Ebay?
Pat,
Because 1968 & 1969 were different from 1970, then some, but not all, of 1971 was different again. And 1972 was different yet. There were even differences in some 1970 from yours. More differences than similarities. I suspect the original intent may have been to thwart thieves, but it has made judging a lot more fun.
