I would like know the customer price GM dealers are receiving for the 427 Anniversary ZL-1 crate engine (GM p/n 19166392). These crate engines are a limited production run of 427 serialized units of which serial number 1 was sold at the Barrett Jackson auction earlier this year. The remaining 426 units are being shipped to GM dealers beginning August 2008. Several units have appeared on Ebay at various buy it now prices up to $32,000. One auction did settle with a winning bid of approximately $25,000.
I have talked to a GM dealer who is asking $23,500 for the Anniversary 427 ZL-1. I have also heard that GM is selling these engines to its dealers for $22,900 with certain incentives that would reduce that amount.
This currently available 427 Anniversary ZL-1 does not have the racing oriented components of the original 1969 427 ZL-1. However, it does have some nice high performance components that should generate 450+ horsepower. The fact that only 427 units are being produced together with the ZL-1 heritage leads me to think that GM can justify selling this crate engine for an extreme price! I believe a ZL-1 engine could be cloned for much less than $20,000 but then you would not have one of GM's serialized anniversary units with all the accompanying documentation.
I am curious to know if anyone can provide some knowledge or guidance regarding actual selling prices for the Anniversary 427 ZL-1 by GM dealers.
