    John Hinkley,

Can you explain why GM took the time and effort to hand write a "pull date" on a frame that already had a manufacturers build date on it?

I've asked this question before: Why were all the parts used in various positions in the assy of the car marked with the part manufacturing date (door panels, carpet, voltage regulators, engines transmissions, etc) and ONLY the frame was marked with a "use" "pull" date?
I know there is a photo of a stack of frames all with the same "pull date" in Nolan Adams book. These frames do NOT have a manufacturers build date incorporated into the stencil. Could these frames have been marked at the frame manufacturers plant, with the hand written date, until someone decided to incorporate the date into the stencil. After all they are all on the same pallet.
I can see where stencils could have been made daily, as they are paper and don't last thru numerous uses.....as in 100+ per day, so someone decided to incorporate the date into the stencil to eliminate hand marking the date.

      Steve -

I have no idea why St. Louis marked a "pull date" on frames, at least through '66; I spent 38 years in assembly plants, and can't imagine any reason why the plant would put a hand-scrawled date on any part when they weren't being paid to do it. I've seen photos of the frame stacks on the "frame pad" outside with no date on them, so they were added indoors, when the stack was brought to the end of the frame upside-down line. We'll probably never know why it was done.

Thanks John.... At least someone saw the frames without the dates.... hadn't heard that before. Maybe GM required a date on these just like they did on everything else and the vendor was not doing it so someone was assigned the job to keep the QC folks happy.....
