08 oil and filter change ??

I am getting ready to change oil in my 08. It came with Mobil 1 oil and AC filter.I don't know whether to stay with that or go with Valvoline synthetic and AC filter? Valvolines tests claim to be much better than Mobil 1? But again that is Valvolines tests. Or use Mobil one filter rather than AC? What are you guys running? Tom

You'll get a million opinions, but we use Mobil 1 and AC filters. We sevice hundreds of new Corvettes and that's all we use.

You should review your warranty booklet.

Engine oil for new Corvettes must meet a specific GM specification rather than just the current API SM specification. Of course, Mobil 1 does, and this should be stated on the label. Other products may be comparable to Mobil 1, but unless the mfgs. spent the money to do all the qualification tests to certify their product to the GM spec, it doesn't meet the warranty requirement.

You may have more leeway on the filter, but I doubt if the Mobil 1 filter is functionally better than the AC.

Keep in mind that if you use GM recommended products and follow their recommended maintenance schedule, the nominal life of the engine is 200-300K miles before major work should be necessary, so unless you really think you're going to rack up that mileage there is no need to fret about oil and filters.

A lot of owners claim to change the oil on new Corvettes every 3000 miles rather than going the 7-15K miles that the oil monitoring system allows before you get into the oil change window. This is a complete waste of money and resources, but IIRC for warranty maintenance, GM also requires an oil change at least every year, regardless of mileage.

Again, read the warranty/maintenance booklet and follow GM's requirements for maintenance products and service intervals and beware of mfgs. claims and anecdotal evidence from other owners. GM Powertrain knows a lot more about Corvette engines than any marketing outfit or Internet bloggers.

Thanks for thr great input. I am going to just stay with the Mobil 1 and AC filter. That is what came with the car so that should be good enough. I don't plan on racing it at Daytona or Sebring anytime soon. Thanks again. Tom

I would use the Mobil 1. For one thing, Mobil 1 meets GM standard 4718M. To be approved for use in a Corvette, the oil must meet this GM standard. Not all synthetic motor oils do. To be sure, it should specifically state on the container that it meets GM 4718M. If it doesn't say this and you try to determine it by calling Valvoline customer service, you're VERY likely to get a "non-definitve" answer.

As far as the filter goes, I think you'll be just fine with the AC PF-48, aka GM #89017524. This is a cellulosic media filter, but it will meet all of GM's specifications. The Mobil 1 filter is a synthetic media filter. Personally, I like synthetic media filters and use them pretty religiously. However, I can't really tell you that they are worth the significant extra cost. I'm not even sure that Mobil 1 offers a filter in PF-48 equivalent.
