    64 starter noise

I have just replaced a working starter and solenoid on my 64 327/300 M20 with a numbers matching starter and solenoid that came with it. The starter that was there was installed with 2 shims. New starter is now also installed with the same 2 shims.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would say that you need some MODIFICATION in the number of shims. That may be MORE SHIMS, LESS SHIMS, or different shimming at either bolt position. The fact that the starter you took off used 2 shims is NOT an indication that the same shimming will be required for another starter. The same shimming may well be a "good place to start", but it's not definitive. Most starters require no shimming, at all.

It's basically trial and error. I would try removing the shims altogether and see what happens. If there's a problem, add one shim back.

Have you installed the starter-to-block brace? It's absolutely essential.

            John,

Yes, the brace is there. The bolt that mounts the brace on the block was loose before I started this project, but it is tight now.

I removed the shims as suggested by Joe. There was no difference in the noise. Both starter and solenoid were rebuilt, so I assume they are OK. Maybe this is not a safe assumption. I still have the working starter and solenoid.

The noise is present only for a fraction of the second while starter is disengaging the flywheel. The flywheel teeth were in excellent condition when I inspected them prior to putting new starter in.

            Thanks!

            Igor
