Re: 72 War Bonnet Yellow paint code
I would assume any b/c urethane is gonna look more metallic than the original lacquer. But PPG or one of the other paint suppliers must have a "formula" that they represent as War Bonnet Yellow #989. Somebody must have used one of these "formulas" and found it some what acceptable. I hope Brad Maynard has a #code he was fairly pleased with.
We apprecieate the original look of lacquer and know the b/c urethane is not going to look "correct". But my friend wants the modern convience of the urethane and that is whom I'm doing the car for. It's not for flight judging just pure enjoyment...............- Top

I was not talking about the flake, which is another whole issue, but the color, tint, shade, what ever. Still have not seen one that is even close to the original. There are two cars here that have the original paint on them.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: 72 War Bonnet Yellow paint code
A handy resource mentioned several times before is Auto Color Libraray (www.autocolorlibrary.com). They list factory original blend codes by make and year showing color chips and providing paint technical sheets. You can checkbox the paint composition of your choice (lacquer, urethane, Etc.) to see the technical sheet(s)...
Plus, some of the library entries cite additional pages from the paint book giving you the blend codes and gloss factors for various interior components that were painted! I've found it interesting to see the gloss factors for interior components of Corvette typically differ from their Chevy passenger car counterparts...
Try this link to the 1972 library entry for Chevrolet:

Re: 72 War Bonnet Yellow paint code
Jack there are no mixing formulas available using those codes. The colors they mix are offset colors. Most, if not all, of those tints that were referenced in those formulas are not available today.
Your best bet is to have an original spot of paint scanned, have a test panel shot, and then tint to match.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: 72 War Bonnet Yellow paint code
Gene,
I sent you a longer version of this via email but code numbers I have written down are a Valspar code of Y777 and a PPG code of 2351 the latter of which may be laquer and not BC/CC -not sure. I got these from PPG at phone number 1 800 9 BUY PPG.
I did not buy my paint via PPG directly, but the body guy who painted my car does use PPG. I can try to find out what formula he used or other info if needed.- Top

Re: 72 War Bonnet Yellow paint code
Thank you all for the info. I should have something to start with with the addition of the PPG web info. and the numbers Brad supplied.
If all these don't pan out I can have the old color optical scanned.- Top
