Steering Box #'s

More ???'S on the steering box. I took a look at my 68 BB steering box and the cast iron cover plate had the check & lube markings and a small casting pad with a 23 on it and maybe another no on this pad, then there is a 6723 on the cover and also a faint pair of stamped no,s. I could not find the 5677649 or the other GM #'s of 5677642 or 5677646 in sec 6.803 (parts book) on the steering box. Are they hard to spot? I guess I don't know what I'm looking for or at and any help would be appreciated.

Dale -- this is a late '65 box, but may help you interpret your '68. The 5677649 is really hard to see, as it's right next to the inner fender (at least on C2's). What you see as '6723' on your cast cover might be the 5666723 shown on mine (also note the cast '55' following --have no idea what this is).

The 5677646 shown in the parts book is the # for the steering gear assembly. I bougt an NOS one in the box with GM sticker marked 7808927, with aluminum cover cast 7802287. Also, on case, after the stylized Saginaw 'S', there's 01779, with a screw head at the beginning. I'm guessing that this is a date.

Thanks for the great pics. I'm not near the car so I have to look at some old pictures. O.K., I did notice some raised lettering in the pics that appeared to be at the same location as the castings on yours. At least I know where to look now, so thanks again.
