GS #001 (the Penske roadster) sat behind his shop in Reading under a tarp for almost two years waiting for someone to come up with $6,000 for it. Who knew.....

Yup. Then it wound up in Texas and sat outside again after a few years of racing. Was pretty ugly at this point. Check out the 65 style nose.

I tried to buy it over three decades ago but someone else beat me to it by several days. He had the cash.
Was VERY reasonably priced at that time.

Richard Buxbaum's car hauler driver, Jay Savarese, told me about the car being for sale in Texas for $23,000. I definitely wanted it and Richard didn't so I told him I would try to buy it.
The following day, Richard decided he did want it and came up with the money before I did. ($22,000. bought the car) That was a lot of cash to have laying around 30 years ago.

I shot the pic, above, (and many more) a week later when the car was delivered to Buxbaum.

Guessing, I would say it was probably 1978?

I remember the George Wintersteen roadster in Road & Track, about '65 I believe???, without engine or transmission for $4,500.00. I remember asking my dad to loan me the difference between my savings, about $2,000 plus what I could get for my '57 and the $4,500. He thought I was nuts! Another Woulda', Coulda', Shoulda'!

I believe it was advertised in a car magazine for $4500, with its Traco motor.

Yup, sure do. That was the day the GS rolled into Classic Motors. I think I shot two or three rolls of film on the car that day. Glad I did.

Notice the aluminum door hinges that are held in place with aluminum bolts. Incredible amounts of light weight components and construction.
The windshield pillar was a VERY thin sheet of aluminum wrapped around a piece of light weight wood. Really. Every pound that could be deducted from the total, was.

As I remember, It was very difficult to obtain the 200 MPH speedometer that was in the instrument panel. I thought that was a seperate purchase, am I right?

Mike -- Refresh my memory. At the time we DID know the significance of that car! Do you remember the Bill Mitchell car?
