    Re: 1960 engine question

    Bob,

Good news, I relayed your information about the tabs to my friend who went and cleand up the gaskets we removed and sure enough, there were the tabs under 48 years of grease. We will put them aside and use them on the rebuild.

    Thanks!

I find it interesting that the torque from the head bolts would be enough to distort the cylinder walls creating a pocket or dimple in the cylinder. Thanks for the input!

      Tom,

The deformed areas adjacent to the head bolts are only a few thou at their deepest. Looks worse than it really is, because the rusting, over the years, has accentuated the areas, much like a fingerprint shows up with dusting. The uneven ring wiping over the years, plus the long corrosion process has accented the deformed areas. I've never seen that phenomenon before, but it's living proof of why racers always "blueprint" their engines by having the cylinders bored with torque plates bolted to the decks. That way, the bores are pre-stressed and already deformed before the boring process. When the heads are bolted on later, the cylinder bores deform again, but this time to perfectly circular cross sections.

        Re: 1960 engine question

        Joe,

I have rebuilt several engines over the years, used to drag race a big block Camaro, I always insisted that a torque plate be used both for boring and honing. I knew it was good practice as it was always recommended by my machine shop. Now I know why!

That is one reason I like rebuilding engines, you never stop learning something new, plus you get to accumulate a bunch of cool tools!

        Thanks,
        Tom

Thomas your I.D. plate matches the block. It looks like you have a numbers matching motor.Great pictures! Get me the castings just to confirm it's posatively correct. So far I would be keeping the block 100% you mentioned you do a it of drag racing so take the block down to your machine man just to see what he can do with it good luck !!!

Hey, nice find. It looks like your 1960 came off of the line a couple days ahead of mine, #8061. Mine is in the middle of a frame off restoration and I can't wait for it to be done. I bought it as a basket case, so have never driven it or even seen it together.

              Greg,

Thanks. Good luck with yours. I think it will be a while before we get this one on the road also.
