    62 underdash wiring

Dash lights went out. All fuses look ok. What is the little button on the bottom of the headlight switch? Is it a reset? Also, I found a gray colored wire hanging near the ignition switch. I don't think it attaches to the open terminal on the ignition switch does it?

John, the 'buttom' on the switch when pushed releases the push/pull knob from the switch so it can be removed. Grey wire might be the ignition switch light wire, is it broken lose? All grey wires are dash light related I believe. See if you have tail lights? Same fuse as dash lights. Replace fuses as a double check on them, read them with ohm meter etc. Happy Hunting

Tail lights work. Pulled all fuses & look ok. Gray wire doesn't reach all the way to the ignition switch. Do I need to loosen up the wiring harness to get it to reach?

Just a thought, no one turned the headlight switch till it dimmed the dash lights off? Good Luck

Second that on the 'dimmer' feature of the headlight switch. John, what's on the end of the 'grey wire'? Looked at a 61 AIM and not sure the ign switch had a light? Lighter socked does, is the wire broken off? Any sockets without wires you can see? Check the dash dimmer feature and maybe you'll get 'lucky'!

If the dash lights have not been turned off, the reostat has gone bad. You'll need a new switch.

Dan, the only socket w/o a wire is an empty terminal on the ignition switch. The end of the gray wire has (coupler that appears to slide on to a terminal).

As mentioned before, all the gray wires had bulbs on the end of them, and illuminated one of the gages. It sounds like someone has been under there in the past--that always makes things more difficult.

Replaced the light switch and now have dash lights. Still don't know where the extra wire attaches. Thanks everyone.

                    john,
Maybe the wire for the bulb to illuminate the cigarette lighter, next to the ignition switch? There should be a small metal bulb socket holder which clips on top of the lighter housing. It's stamped "PRESS".
