Re: Joe Lucia
I don't recall if these moldings have a GM part number on them; my vague recollection is that there is no part number on them. However, IF they do, I feel pretty confident it would not be visible with the molding on the car; it would be embossed on the rear side of the molding.
The 1970-77 rocker moldings used in PRODUCTION, GM #3966607 and 3966608 were NEVER available in SERVICE. From the beginning until they were discontinued 6 years ago they were known in SERVICE as GM #3977623 and 3977624. Why? I have no idea. It's a VERY, VERY unusual circumstance for pieces like this.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Joe Lucia
This difference might be because the 1970-72 (and maybe a little later, I'm not sure when it ended) production moldings have a tab on the bottom front. I'm a little surprised there wasn't a part number change for the with and without tab rocker moldings, or was there Joe?
I've suspected for years that the moldings with the "tabs" were the PRODUCTION moldings, GM #3966607 and 3966608. However, these molding were used in PRODUCTION for the entire 1970-77 period. So, if the "tabs" disappeared sometime in that period, I don't know what to think.
The SERVICE moldings were always GM #3977623 and 3977624. These part numbers NEVER replaced earlier part numbers (i.e. they never replaced earlier part numbers that were the same as PRODUCTION part numbers). Once again, if someone has some known SERVICE examples of these pieces and they do have the tabs, I don't know what to think.
I would be very interested if someone with these moldings, either with the tabs or without, would carefully examine the rear of them for evidence of embossed part numbers. As I mentioned, my recollection of these is that there were no part numbers, but maybe I just missed them.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Joe Lucia
Yes, the nut and screw used in conjunction with the "tabs" were eliminated in 1974 as you mention. However, that does not necessarily mean that the tabs, themselves, were also eliminated at that time. Do we otherwise know that the tabs on the rocker moldings were, in fact, eliminated coincident with the elimination of the fasteners?
Also, just wanted to confirm that you got my e-mail response on your trim ring question? In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
