Re: '62 gas mileage
John, thanks for the reply. It looks as if I am getting a whopping 11.5 mpg. That makes me think I have something out of tune. Now, where to look. No, the brakes are not dragging. I seem to remember my previous '62 which had an identical power train,though it had alot more miles on the engine, was always in the 16 mpg. neighborhood.- Top

Re: '62 gas mileage
I'd use a gps or map out an exact distance 'driving course' with an on-line program.
Top off the tank and refill to see how much gas you actually used. I'll bet your getting more than 11pmg unless you are leaking fuel.
Check your speedo/odo on the highway mileage markers. If you run at 60mph it should take a minute to go 1 mile.
Check the rim temps with an ir gun or just your hand to see if any wheel is significantly hotter than another.- Top

Re: '62 gas mileage
David;
You mean changing the Nylon "speedo" gear in the tail shaft housing, don't you? I wouldn't think you would need to change the driving gear on the shaft itself unless it's damaged. There should be enough Nylon "speedo" gears available with different numbers of teeth to get you back into the ballpark, I would think. They, of course, are a whole lot easier to change than the gear on the shaft.

Re: '62 gas mileage
Stu, I wish you were right. In this case I need to replace the steel gear on the shaft. The trans must have came out of a 3.70 or higher rear end ratio and just changing the nylon gear doesn't work. Been there, done that.- Top

Re: '62 gas mileage
David;
Can't say that I ever ran into that myself, back in the day. But then we were only changing pumpkins in the range of 3.55 to 4.56 and we always got into the ball park with a change of the Nylon gear. I say ball park because we then changed tires and/or wheels anyway and we were always off some. The main concern then was speeding and not gas mileage, of course. You always learned real quick where you had to be when going thru a 25 or 35 mph speed trap.

Re: '62 gas mileage
Stu, it was a first for me as well. When the nylon gear that came with the trans. was in, it is obvious it is 15% off. Of course I ran and got the "correct" gear and then I had no speedo at all. The correct nylon gear(blue) is too small to engage the steel gear on the shaft. Put the gear back in that came with the trans.(green) and it works again, though 15% off. I did some research and found out that there is different steel gears for the main shaft depending on the rear end ratio. Of course, if I am wrong, please help me out. It is alot easier to change the nylon gear than to remove the trans. and replace the steel gear.
I have not used my GPS yet. I have been followed and found out by those following, that my speedo was off. Another way is some towns have those radar boards that show what your speed is as you enter into town. I am always showing 7mph slow.- Top

Re: '62 gas mileage
Back in the day when switching between the 3:08 and 4:11 in the 62 I just used the tach to figure my speed. Got a buddy to drive at specific speeds and checked where my tach needle was pointing in 4th. Crude but effective no math needed.- Top
