    Valve Seals

    How big a job is it to replace valve seals on a 1965 327/300? Any suggestions on the best manual to help me through the process?

    It's not a real big deal, at all. You need three things besides normal hand tools:

    1) air compressor;

    2) spark plug fitting for pressurizing the cylinder;

    3) lever-type valve spring compressor

    Items #2) and 3) are often available as a kit from sources like Lisle or K-D Tools. Not very expensive.

    The Chevrolet Service Manual will provide all the information you need.

    Very straight-forward procedure. Be cautious of this, though:

    When you install the new seals, you must do it in this order:

    1) install valve spring, metal oil shield and retainer;

    2) compress valve spring and retainer:

    3) INSTALL NEW "O-ring" seal on valve in the proper groove and so it's not "twisted" ;

    4) install valve locks;

    5) release valve spring compression.

      Thanks Joe. I've got a problem with dry seals. If the car sits more than a couple of days, I get a ton of smoke until it warms up. Strangely enough, it does't burn a significant amount of oil and I never have to add oil between changes. The last time I had this problem (10 years ago or so) replacing the seals took care of it. I had it done then, but am retired now and have the time to try it myself. Your guidance will be a big help in getting me through it. -- Mark

        Mark one suggestion, do one cylinder for new seals and start you 65 and adjust the lifters before doing another cylinder.

          I dont' have any part numbers off the top of my head, but seek out and buy Viton seals. The common type are nitrile rubber. Viton will outlast nitrile at least two to one before they harden, crack, and allow excess oil to pass.
