Anti-Chatter Springs on 63 Brake Drums

Has any one changed or replaced the anti-chatter springs on their brake drums - I suppose they would be found on all 53 thru 64 (some 65) models? I have correct new ones, but have never put them on since my recent brake job. I've tried every tool in my garage, but can't find any combination that I feel I won't end up injuring myself.

Your Thoughts please.

Stu, I place mine on the outer most rim of the drum, roll it down towards the slot it is to fit into then push it over into place. Has always worked for me. No tools used, just gloves.

Thanks for the response. I trust you mean the hub (outer) portion of the drum? Do you do them on or off the car? I've tried both ways (On & Off) and can't seem to get them started. They just have too much tension. I even tried with the old ones and can't even get them back on, so I'm sure they are correct.

I did this last weekend with the drum off the car. Clip the ends of the spring together and place the loop over the drum half way down. Hold it it in place with a couple of C-clamps spaced about 6 inches apart. You don't clamp the spring directly, you clamp the drum with the spring underneath it so that it can't climb back up.

The with gloved hands, roll the remaining part of the spring over the rest of the drum. The spring will want to unroll and climb back off the drum, so you have to keep after it until you get it rolled all the way down and into the groove.

FYI - The correct 63 spring will have the flat wire. I think the repo round wire springs are too short.

Thanks for the suggestion. Funny, I have used "C" clamps for so many one man projects, but never gave it a thought for this.

I have both types of springs and would naturally prefer to use the correct ones. My only problem with them is the ends are less inclined to stay cliped together when you try to apply to the drum. I agree, the round ones are shorter, but they also have more tension. I'm running right now w/o and don't notice any difference. In fact, back in the day, we used to remove them to allow for slightly better air circulation for cooling - go figure.
